Groombridge lost the toss and were surprisingly asked to take the field - phew!
Ah... But late drama, Johnny Slade had become detached from the convey and did not arrive at the ground... technology and the eventual correct mobile number tracked him down to Limpsfield Town's ground!
An exceptional start saw the hosts reduced to 4 for 3 thanks to the slow swingers of Jerry Smith, even with 2 dropped catches he finished with 3 for 20 from 9 overs. Steady batting saw the score to 74 before a couple of wickets from Geoff Smith. - Another good parthership (152 for 5) and too many runs was now a possibility. However, GCC managed to pull it back with the dependable Martin Erxleben and newcomer Anthony Marchant; 20 runs too many but not a disaster.
Simon Scales(31) willingly stepped into the vacant opening berth and with clean hitting Keith Sleat(45) they accumulated slowly at first but with some super running and some big hits they took the total to 93 in 18 overs. The platform was strong enough to allowed some circumspect and responsible batting from Ralph Erxleben (35no)supported well by Hue Jenkins(14)...GCC past the line, albeit a little too wobbly for the incoming batsmen, with 4 balls to spare. NB. Two COLTS (U15) Nick Taylor and Jacob Sleat both performed bravely and enthusiastically behind the stumps and in the field. |
